2.3.1 Generalities

The cover letter should be hand written when it is being sent by the post office.

It has been noted that candidates who use electronic mail to send their applications and who have typed their letters tend to receive calls for interviews. However, some companies continue to request hand written letters and at times perform analyses on the handwriting. It is therefore best to continue to handwrite cover letters.

The cover letter should be concise, brief and not exceed a size A4 paper.

  • The style of writing should be professional rather than literary : use simple and direct sentences (especially for those who may have difficulty expressing themselves).

  • It is important to follow guidelines on how to write a cover letter (Cf. 2.3.2).

  • As a professional document, the cover letter should be concise. It should be written in blue or black ink, preferably with a feather pen or a ball pen, on a white A4 format sheet of paper.

  • Skip a line or leave some space between each line when writing the letter as to not crowd the page. Leave extra space between each paragraph.

  • The cover letter should contain zero spelling errors. Should you make a mistake while handwriting your letter, start over on a new piece of paper. Under no circumstances should you cross out the mistake or even white it out.

  • Use a "line-guider" (put an already lined paper under the sheet of paper on which you are writing to help you write in a straight line).

  • The quality of the writing is important. Take care to write as neatly and as legibly as possible.

  • Pay attention to the envelope ! Double check the address of the destination and make sure to write your contact information on the back of the envelope, so that it may be returned to you if the sending address is incorrect.
